Dunedin stadium fund needs Sir Eion Edgar’s pledge
By Wilma McCorkindale
The pressure is on Otago philanthropist Sir Eion Edgar to stump up with the $1 million donation he pledged to Dunedin’s stadium.

Link was live 2 hours ago… story pulled. Oh dear.

[That’s a major chunk of money promised, philanthropically speaking. An explanation and clarification is needed for the donation that did not eventuate. We’re waiting.]

Which stadium – the Edgar Stadium or the or the one at the new Albatross Colony in Aotea St?

Any clues from Wilma on how the Qtown Controller managed to get the story pulled? Another Mains/Graham class action?

Very interesting. Clearly, Edgar is more concerned about how is he perceived in public than doing the right thing. But the reality clearly is that he promised or pledged a donation of a million dollars for the stadium which simply has not been delivered. What Forsyth Barr purchased as a product has no connection with a personal donation. In any case, people should be reminded of the hooplah at the time of this naming rights circus when Edgar and Farry claimed all sorts of huge deals had been reached when again, as time passed, it was revealed that the actualities were nothing like the press statements. Forsyth Barr got well over 2 years of publicity for no cost at all.

If Edgar believes that the public are confused about the differences between donations and purchases then he should make all of the arrangements between himself, Farry, the CST, DVML and Forsyth Barr public so that the public can judge for themselves just what went down.

What is most disturbing is the attack on freedom of the press and how the media can be intimidated by powerful interests.

Edgar states that the $1m pledge formed part of the naming rights agreement, yet he made the pledge in August 2008 and Forsyth Barr didn’t sign the naming rights until 5 months later in January 2009. During this period of time we have Malcolm Farry stating that there were a number of interested parties the CST was negotiating with.
As Russell pointed out above, a personal donation pledge is completely separate to a corporate contract. As Chairman of Forsyth Barr, Edgar knows this. Edgar can’t have it both ways. It is time Edgar honoured his promise.
