Uptown funk (Minions Voice)
Music: “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars (Google Play • iTunes)

Minions are small, yellow, pill-shaped creatures who have existed since the beginning of time, evolving from single-celled organisms into beings who exist only to serve history’s most villainous masters. They find great masters—including a T. Rex, a caveman, an Egyptian pharaoh, Dracula, and Napoleon —but after accidentally killing nearly all of them with their incompetence, they decide to isolate themselves from the world and start a new life in Antarctica. By 1968, the lack of a master drives them into depression, so one minion—Kevin—plans to find a new master.

Minions is a 2015 American 3D computer-animated family comedy film, and a prequel/spin-off to the Despicable Me franchise. Produced by Illumination Entertainment for Universal Pictures, it was directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, written by Brian Lynch, and produced by Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy. The film stars Coffin (as the Minions), Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan, and narrated by Geoffrey Rush. It was first foreshadowed in the end credits of Despicable Me 2, where Stuart, Kevin, and Bob, three of the Minions, are seen auditioning for the film.

Minions premiered on June 11, 2015, in London, and was released in the United States on July 10, 2015. Despite mixed reviews, the film has grossed over $655 million worldwide.

Josep Ferrando slots a skinny house between two existing properties in Spain
By Jessica Mairs | Photography by Adrià Goula
Concealed behind a historic facade, this narrow residence by Barcelona architect Josep Ferrando is wedged between the party walls of a pair of houses in the Spanish city of Sant Cugat. The 225-square-metre residence fills a gap measuring less than six metres wide between two existing buildings in Sant Cugat – a town north of Barcelona that is also home to a picturesque Medieval monastery, an architecture school and a chocolate factory. The proximity to Barcelona and the surrounding Catalonian countryside makes Sant Cugat a popular location, resulting in a dearth of land in the town centre. This led Ferrando to squeeze the family home behind the facade of an old row house, right up against the walls of its two neighbours.

Entitled 176 House E+M after the names of the clients, the residence sits opposite the town’s Medieval monastery. The historic facade of the original property was preserved, and the new concrete block was built behind. Due to a drop in ground level across the site, the living room is sunk below ground at the front but sits slightly above a garden at the back. An atrium area with the living room provides an additional source of daylight for the kitchen and dining area above. Three house-shaped volumes made from chipboard are suspended within the upper floors of the narrow building. These timber pods enclose a child’s bedroom, the family bathroom and a study that links with a roof terrace overlooking the garden. A pivoting flap opens or closes the child’s bedroom to the atrium, offering views over the kitchen.

Beyoncé-inspired skyscraper to be built in Melbourne
By Amy Frearson
Australian firm Elenberg Fraser has won planning approval for a 226-metre-high Melbourne skyscraper that will feature a curvaceous form taken from a music video by Beyoncé (+ slideshow). The new Premiere Tower at 134 Spencer Street will boast a series of curves and bulges designed to make it as structurally efficient as possible, but that also reference one of Beyoncé’s music videos.

The shape is an homage to the undulating fabric-wrapped bodies of dancers in the singer’s music video for Ghost – a song from her self-titled 2013 album, which was originally published as one half of track called Haunted but released as a stand-alone music video. “For those more on the art than science side, we will reveal that the form does pay homage to something more aesthetic – we’re going to trust you’ve seen the music video for Beyoncé’s Ghost,” said the Melbourne-based studio.

The 68-storey structure, which was approved by planning officials in May, will be located at the west end of the city’s central business district. It will contain 660 apartments, as well as a 160-room hotel. Parametric modelling – a type of computer-aided design that allows complex shapes to be created in response to data constraints – was used to develop the unique form, which will swell in and out at various points around the facade.

PHOTOGRAPH

Loving can hurt / Loving can hurt sometimes / But it’s the only thing / That I know

And when it gets hard / You know it can get hard sometimes / It is the only thing that makes us feel alive

We keep this love in a photograph / We made these memories for ourselves / Where our eyes are never closing / Hearts are never broken / And times are forever frozen still

So you can keep me / Inside the pocket / Of your ripped jeans / Holdin’ me closer / Til our eyes meet / You won’t ever be alone / Wait for me to come home

Loving can heal / Loving can mend your soul / And is the only thing / That I know (know) / I swear it will get easier / Remember that with every piece of ya / And it’s the only thing we take with us when we die

We keep this love in a photograph / We make these memories for ourselves / Where our eyes are never closing / Our hearts were never broken / And times forever frozen still / So you can keep me / Inside the pocket / Of your ripped jeans/ Holdin’ me closer / Till our eyes meet / You won’t ever be alone

And if you hurt me / Well that’s ok baby only words bleed / Inside these pages you just hold me / And I won’t ever let you go

Wait for me to come home / Wait for me to come home / Wait for me to come home / Wait for me to come home

Oh you can fit me / Inside the necklace you got when you were 16 / Next to your heartbeat / Where I should be / Keep it deep within your soul

And if you hurt me / Well that’s ok baby only words bleed / Inside these pages you just hold me / And I won’t ever let you go

When I’m away / I will remember how you kissed me / Under the lamppost / Back on 6th street / Hearing you whisper through the phone / Wait for me to come home

Film highlighting pollution woes vanishes from China’s Internet
By Dian Zhang
A 104-minute film lecture that outlines the serious pollution in China has been removed from the nation’s internet, after receiving millions of views and raising hopes that the country’s leadership might tackle China’s widespread smog problem. The film – by Chai Jing, one of the best-known journalists in China and a well-known former state television reporter – was released right before China’s two most important political events, the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. Before the movie was censored, a story from Xinhua News Agency, China’s official press agency, praising the film was deleted online the same night the article was posted, offering a hint of the government’s real attitude.

Released last Saturday, Under the Dome had received 42.9 million views on Youku, a video-sharing website like YouTube, by 5 pm Thursday (local time). It prompted 530,460 posts on Weibo.

In the film, Chai gives a speech and shows data and interviews with government officials and environmental experts from China and abroad. The film shows striking images of the extent of air pollution in a number of Chinese cities, as well as rivers fouled by chemicals and littered with flotsam and dead fish. Chai also travelled to Los Angeles and London to gauge their experiences dealing with smog.

Where does it come from? What do we do from here? It is very powerful in many ways. English subtitles are now completely finished, and other languages are being added.

A continuously changing surface that rises and falls and bulges in the middle to include a theatre and opera house. Organised like block chords of music that open up and close, it is reminiscent of both Wagnerian chromaticism and the tonal melding of Philip Glass and John Adams.

Dunedin: Watching the detectives

Comment received from Alex Brown
Submitted on 2014/12/23 at 11:41 am

A quote from a Vandervis email dated Friday 19 Dec at 11.54am is concerning:

“Even more concerning was Detective Preece’s assertion to me that ‘all those that had acquired DCC vehicles needed to do, was to say that they understood Mr Bachop had the authority to dispose of them’ for them not to be liable for receiving or criminal prosecution. Detective Preece said that all those he had interviewed who had acquired DCC vehicles had said just that.”

That is not all the “others” needed to do to explain away their part, particularly when Brent Bachop has been held solely accountable on the strength of no interview. Little credence is given to what suspects say or don’t say these days and that is why circumstantial and independent evidence carries far more weight.

Crimes Act section 246 – Receiving
(1) Everyone is guilty of receiving who receives any property stolen or obtained by any other imprisonable offence, knowing that property to have been stolen or so obtained, or being reckless as to whether or not the property had been stolen or so obtained.

It was never intended that “knowingly” and “recklessness” be simply explained away by a suspect, as suggested by Detective Preece. Other evidence can be far more compelling and he is not prevented from investigating it – the cheap price paid for the DCC cars, the number and frequency of transactions, outside normal business practices, the transactional documents, communication between the parties – or did Bachop communicate or implicate other persons to his closest friends or loved ones before he died. The fact that Vandervis raised the alarm within the organisation over 2 years and nothing was done tends to suggest the involvement of others.

The law states the crime of receiving is as serious as the crime of theft, but the criminal courts have long considered it more serious because without willing receivers (the black market) there would be no thieving.

Elvis Costello – Watching the Detectives (song & lyrics)
Created with written permissions/agreements with: Universal Music Group.
The single, produced by Nick Lowe, was the first to be credited to ‘Elvis Costello & the Attractions’, reflecting the new backing band that he was using, previous releases being credited solely to the singer. The lead track was, in fact, recorded in May 1977, before the Attractions existed – the backing band on the song were Steve Goulding on drums and Andrew Bodnar on bass guitar, both from Graham Parker’s band, The Rumour. Keyboard overdubs were added later by Steve Nason (later better-known as Steve Nieve). It was also the first top 40 hit in the UK Singles Chart for Costello, reaching #15 and spending a total of eleven weeks in the chart.

Elvis Costello (b. 1954, London) is an English singer-songwriter. He began his career as part of London’s pub rock scene in the early 1970s and later became associated with the first wave of the British punk and new wave movement of the mid-to-late 1970s.
