Best watched 1080p. Tunnel Beach offers spectacular coast line scenery a short drive from Dunedin city. On the walk down the rolling green farm land and ocean views are rewarding (back up is a little harder). A hand mined tunnel leads to a private cove (Tunnel Beach) which is best accessed around low tide. Flight views taken with a TBS Discovery Pro drone | GoPro 3+ | Skyzone FPV goggles.

Tunnel Beach is located two kilometres south of Dunedin. The walkway is an easy one hour return walk – although there’s a bit of a climb involved on the way back to the car park. During spring the walkway is closed because of lambing. In the 1870s the tunnel was carved through a rock promontory to allow access to a secluded and sheltered beach the cliffs. The best time to go is around low tide. Filmed with DJI Phantom 2 & GoPro Hero 4 Black in 4K @ 30fps (Ultra HD).

The only way onto this secluded little beach near Dunedin is down a tunnel stairway carved out of the rock cliff that surrounds it….. Not for the faint hearted, the walk back up from the Beach is a good fitness test.

Warning signs are being put up by the Dunedin City Council at St Clair Beach this morning, following another close call in the surf this week. A video has been posted online showing a group of people running towards the St Clair Surf Club ramp, to avoid being swept away by a large rogue wave, including a man who had to pick up his children and run.

Know your limits, surf life-savers say

Beachgoers in Dunedin are being urged to know their limits before taking to the water after surf life-savers rescued nine people in less than a month. Surf Life Saving New Zealand Otago-Southland club support officer Sam Clutterbuck said most rescues had been in non-patrolled areas, and some people were clearly not aware of what was safe.

Surf life-savers continue to get the message out to swimmers to stay between the flags and make sensible decisions when taking to the water. There’s been some concerning incidents away from patrolled beaches. And as the weather heats up life guards are expecting to have to put their training into action.

Surf lifesavers fear more people will be injured on rocks piled at the base of the St Clair Beach sea wall. Two people have been rescued from the rocks in the space of nine days. Lifesavers sprang into action on Monday when a young surfer got stuck trying to climb the rocks near the shark bell.

What a fine accommodation for professional rugby this aquatic scheme for the Taieri truly is. Shades of the model so well utilised by the earlier trust named after Carisbrook and headed by Malcolm Farry, still operating as a boon to Dunedin city ratepayers. In the months ahead let’s see how many times the new patron leaves out the word ‘Rugby’ (capital R) or the phrase ‘private property development costs on the City’ in favour of philanthropic zeal expressed for healthy retirement living and enhanced aged care facilities (hydrotherapy for aching rugby shoulders and thighs), sunshine and splash for young families – don’t forget schools! – as the Taieri’s high class soils get carved and private forests near Brighton assist the housing build. Yeah, don’t say there’s merely a saint in goggles amongst us, Lord be praised, it’s the second Dollar coming. An epiphany.

Here we go, more of the sports funding ASK befalling Dunedin City Council, lining up all the (d)ucks and such

Using the old gallery as a “sports house”, providing a permanent base for a variety of sports organisations, had growing support from within organisations, and would allow greater networking opportunities and sharing of resources.

Sport Otago proposes ‘sports hub’

Sport Otago has called for changes to some of Dunedin’s recreational facilities, including turning Logan Park into a fully-fledged sports hub and supporting a “two-pool option” for the city’s aquatic facilities. Speaking at yesterday’s Dunedin City Council annual plan hearing, Sport Otago chief executive John Brimble said Logan Park was now the focal point for sport and recreation in Dunedin.

As we have always suspected, passive recreation at Logan Park for Dunedin residents and visitors will be completely sidelined by organised and professional sports bodies getting the jump on Dunedin City Council for MORE ratepayer funds for their own cause.
