Recycling for plastic packaging arrives

All those plastic bags floating around after shopping expeditions can now be recycled under a joint initiative between the retail sector, the packaging industry and the Government. The Love New Zealand Soft Plastics Recycling programme was launched in Dunedin yesterday, and will enable soft plastics and soft packaging such as shopping bags, bread bags, frozen food bags and food wrap to be recycled at the 14 New World, Countdown, FreshChoice, Pak’n Save and The Warehouse stores in Dunedin and Mosgiel. Associate Environment Minister Scott Simpson said the programme was already running in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Canterbury. […] The $700,000 contribution from the Government’s waste minimisation fund was being matched by contributions from retailers and some suppliers, bringing the total project funding  to more than $1.6million. […] Cargill Enterprises would collect the recycled plastics from the shops.

Last year I convivially swapped emails with the manager of Centre City New World enquiring about how soon the store would adopt the national soft plastics recycling programme. He kindly immediately contacted FoodStuffs to find out ….well the day has come! Happy customer!

Soft Plastics Recycling 
The Love NZ Soft Plastics Programme is about informing New Zealanders about how to keep plastic bags and packaging out of landfill. Collect all the soft plastics which you use at home, make sure the bags are empty and dry and drop them into the Love NZ Soft Plastics Recycling bins at participating stores.

The project is supported by major brands including Asaleo Care, Ceres Organics, Coca Cola Amatil, Cottonsoft, Fonterra, Frucor, George Weston Foods, Goodman Fielder, Griffins, Hubbards, Kathmandu, Kelloggs, Kimberly-Clark, Lululemon, Mars, Mother Earth, Mondelez (Cadbury), Nestle, New Zealand Post, Pams, Pure Delish, Simplot (Birds Eye), Spicers, SunRice and Wrigleys; Amcor Flexibles, Astron, Coveris, Snell Packaging & Safety with many others committed to joining the programme. Soft plastic bags are not currently collected for recycling by councils because they can contaminate the recycling process. New Zealanders use over 1.6 billion plastic bags in the home every year. The project takes all soft plastic bags including bread bags, frozen food bags, toilet paper packaging, confectionery and biscuit wrap, chip bags, pasta and rice bags, courier envelopes, shopping bags, sanitary hygiene packaging – basically anything made of plastic which can be scrunched into a ball. Customers can bring their used soft plastics back to store and put them in the recycling bin.

Alcohol policy appealed

The Dunedin City Council faces a potentially protracted legal battle as New Zealand’s supermarket giants join forces to fight the city’s local alcohol policy. Progressive Enterprises and Foodstuffs are among eight parties — including the  New Zealand Police — to appeal the DCC’s provisional local alcohol policy. The appeals  mean the council’s policy  remains in limbo and changes to curb alcohol-related harm are stalled, more than a year after the initiatives were signed off by councillors.

Minions are small, yellow, pill-shaped creatures who have existed since the beginning of time, evolving from single-celled organisms into beings who exist only to serve history’s most villainous masters. They find great masters—including a T. Rex, a caveman, an Egyptian pharaoh, Dracula, and Napoleon —but after accidentally killing nearly all of them with their incompetence, they decide to isolate themselves from the world and start a new life in Antarctica. By 1968, the lack of a master drives them into depression, so one minion—Kevin—plans to find a new master.

Minions is a 2015 American 3D computer-animated family comedy film, and a prequel/spin-off to the Despicable Me franchise. Produced by Illumination Entertainment for Universal Pictures, it was directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, written by Brian Lynch, and produced by Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy. The film stars Coffin (as the Minions), Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan, and narrated by Geoffrey Rush. It was first foreshadowed in the end credits of Despicable Me 2, where Stuart, Kevin, and Bob, three of the Minions, are seen auditioning for the film.

Minions premiered on June 11, 2015, in London, and was released in the United States on July 10, 2015. Despite mixed reviews, the film has grossed over $655 million worldwide.

More than half of the packaged food in our supermarkets is unhealthy. New research reveals that even what we think is good for us is often saturated in sugar, salt and fats. Only one third of dairy, meat and bread products could be described as healthy, the Auckland University research concluded. And even packaged fruit and vegetables failed to meet health standards 29 per cent of the time. The study’s authors say the findings of so few healthy choices among our staples is a concern for a nation battling obesity issues. They want a health star rating system introduced, a move backed by Consumer New Zealand, which claims the Government is turning a blind eye to obesity.

Mosgiel pool sluts get their tops off for ex ORFU guy

News this morning (see Jacob’s comments, here and here) that parties pushing the New Mosgiel Pool have selected an ex ORFU Board chairman as the person to head the project. We hear the clandestine selection happened prior to yesterday’s meeting of the Mosgiel-Taieri Community Board. You’re too late, naming rights were sewn up for the poolside spa and bikini bar long long ago.

DCC, Slid, if you’re listening —get everything out in the open, don’t dare stymie transparency and accountability through ye olde workshop method where friends of friends clip expensive tickets for each other… while Dunedin ratepayers get ROBBED of natural justice and CLOBBERED for their loot.

And Slid, never assume the bastion of an ex ORFU man has respectibility and honesty written all over it. This does not compute. How much money has ORFU deliberately set about thieving from DCC ratepayers over the years? Yes, that’s right —HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS. And “your DCC” is still on the take to “make the stadium work” —while it quietly plays games with the security of our homes on the global derivatives market. Thanks Athol, mate!

Green Island activity centre

Progressive Enterprises is in talks with the Dunedin City Council aimed at turning the Royal Tavern site and surrounding land at Green Island into a major supermarket development.

New supermarket plan hailed

A planned multimillion-dollar supermarket development in Green Island could bring jobs and investment and trigger wider improvements in the area, a Dunedin city councillor [Colin Weatherall] says. Progressive Enterprises is in talks with the Dunedin City Council aimed at developing a Fresh Choice supermarket on land between Main South Rd and Shand St. The site includes the now-closed Royal Tavern, as well as land next to Green Island Memorial Park and a block of council-owned flats.

A Progressive Enterprises spokeswoman would only say there were no confirmed plans for Green Island, although the company was ”always looking for great sites and Dunedin is no exception”.

The development is yet to be confirmed, but council staff have confirmed ”reasonably serious discussions” began six months ago and are progressing.

The proposed site was zoned ”Local Activity 1”, which allowed for a supermarket as long as conditions – including site coverage and signage – were met. That meant a non-notified consent process – without submissions or a hearing – was most likely, unless special circumstances warranted otherwise.

Are towns built by the UK’s leading supermarket the future of urban development?
Imagine living in a Tesco house, sending your child to a Tesco school, swimming in a Tesco pool and, of course, shopping at the local Tesco superstore. According to the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe), the government’s adviser on architecture and design, this collective monopoly is not an imaginary dystopia. “Tesco Towns” on this model are already being planned across the UK, from Inverness in Scotland to Seaton in Devon.
While the economic downturn has hit many parts of the development industry hard, Tesco recorded profits of nearly £3.4bn last year. Its plans for expansion are reflected by a growing tide of what are described as “supermarket-led mixed-use development proposals” – entire districts of homes, schools and public places built by the company.

Downtown Oklahoma City’s plan revisited

Almost a half century has passed since architect I.M. Pei arrived in Oklahoma City with plans to remake its downtown. And downtown has been a consistent construction zone ever since.
Pei’s plan, which included the demolition of more than 500 buildings, was despised by the city’s locals and outdated in the end, and met its demise in the late 1980s.
A major exhibit of the plan, including a model created by Pei and his firm, is being put on display at the Cox Convention Center starting Monday.
Made of wood and plastic, each inch of the 10-foot-by-12-foot model equals 50 feet of land. Without the advancements of modern technology, this model likely took a sizeable team six months or more to construct by hand. Though the model cost $60,000 to create in 1964, Norman-based architectural model builder Wiley White estimates the display would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars today.
