Dunedin Santa Parade 4 December (tomorrow) at 3pm

Dunedin’s Annual Santa Parade is now in its 19th year. This is Otago’s largest free public event! A dedicated team of volunteers are delighted to bring this Parade to Families and Children.
The Dunedin Santa Parade announces the Arrival of Christmas in Dunedin.
Exciting floats, many bands, marching, Fire Engines, animals, Clowns and of course –Santa. The Parade is followed by a family concert in the lower Octagon.

The parade route starts at The Regent 24 hour Night and Day Store on George street, at 3pm, and travels straight down the main street through the Octagon centre and finishes in Moray Place South by The First Church.

The flavour of the Santa Parade for those who couldn’t make it to George Street on Sunday. Following the eight sets of images (lowres only for website use, sampled from 540 frames) there is a link to last year’s photographs. The only disappointment yesterday was that Santa wore dark glasses….Big Mistake, and failed to pin his hat on securely for gusty conditions, it flew off at the best place to get photos, sigh.

Here be young and old, Mayor Cull, the ‘future generations’ stuck with paying for your amazing +$20 million per annum loss-making stadium, Christmas! If they can pay for it.

Congratulations to parade organiser Mark Laughton and the Dunedin Santa Parade Trust for another highly enjoyable and successful event.

Special Rigs for Special Kids

Special Rigs for Special Kids provides an unforgettable experience to those kids who have special needs.

This Sunday [31.8.14], 250 working rigs (large trucks) will take 350 kids and their families for a unique journey through parts of Dunedin and Mosgiel, starting at and returning to the Edgar Centre Portsmouth Drive. A barbeque, food and drinks have been arranged for the end of trip – that means catering for about 1400 people at the Edgar Centre on the day!

Perfect weather – the event went ahead as planned. The parade started at 3pm at the former BP service station, corner Regent Rd and George St, and travelled to the Octagon where free live music was provided for the crowd.

The 78 floats ranged from a jaw-flapping dragon to referee-jumping roller-skaters and a giant albatross that bellowed Cliff Richard’s song Summer Holiday to mark the official start of the festive season. Dunedin Santa Parade Trust chairman Dean Driver said the parade was ”sensational”.

Monumental research surprising

A labour of love for Dunedin woman Heather Bray is to become part of the official commemorations of the 100th anniversary of World War 1 in 2014.
For the past five years, Mrs Bray and her mother Laurel Corbishley have been transcribing names from all the war memorials and rolls of honour they can find in Otago and Southland. These have ranged from large, official war memorials in the region’s cemeteries and public spaces to lists of names tucked away in businesses and schools, and even stained glass windows in churches.

”We are focusing on Otago and Southland because there is such a strong link between the two regions.” –Heather Bray

Along with listing the names, the project involves finding out as much as possible about the soldiers, from where they went to school to where they were killed. ”With a bit of careful work, it is amazing how much you can find out about them as individuals,” Mrs Bray said.
The ultimate goal of the Dunedin Family History Group president was to print a register of the 3000-plus soldiers named on the Invercargill Cenotaph, cross-referenced to other war memorials around New Zealand. The printing of the register, planned for April 2014, is part of the Government’s official World War 1 centenary programme.
”The unique thing about the project is that we are creating an overall genealogical and social history to go with all those names,” Mrs Bray said.
