LIGHT SWITCH AND CONDUIT
The Jim Barr and Mary Barr Collection
9 Apr 2016 – 14 Aug 2016
This exhibition explores the relationship between artworks and the domestic context by delving into the personal collection of Jim Barr and Mary Barr. Light switch and conduit focuses on their recent period of collecting and brings together works by key figures in the rising generation of contemporary New Zealand artists, alongside more established New Zealand artists and several international artists as well. This exhibition includes work by Dan Arps, Fiona Connor, Simon Denny, Oscar Enberg, Glen Hayward, Kate Newby, Campbell Patterson and Luke Willis Thompson. Link

Len Lye: The father of invention

If Len Lye didn’t exist, you couldn’t have invented him. Born at the dawn of the 20th century, he was the inquisitive kid from the wrong side of the tracks who got thrown out of Samoa for being too friendly, then shovelled coal on a steamer to get to London where he hung out with poets and painters and looked for ways to make art that moved.
In England it was film. In the United States, after he was head-hunted in 1944 to work for the March of Time newsreel service, he made sculpture. He became one of the pioneers of what was dubbed kinetic sculpture, making some works and planning many others beyond the technology of the day.
A visit back to his homeland, New Zealand, brought him into contact with engineers immersed in working steel for the dairy and oil industries, who embraced his vision and set about realising his designs. In the workshops of Taranaki he found not underlings but fellow explorers who strove to understand the properties of the metal.
It was to Taranaki that he left his life’s work on his death in 1980 and it is there, in New Zealand’s first gallery dedicated to the work of a single artist, that the work will continue to cement his position as an artist of influence.

Because….
He was reluctant to sell beneath his value, a lot of the material stayed with him and ended up with us. So his time as a kinetic sculptor is coming again because the material is well-maintained here.
Because….
Lye expected many of his works could not be made with the technology available to him, he endowed the Len Lye Foundation with a licence to create unrealised work or reconstruct existing work.

The public has had its chance to take a first glimpse inside the new $12 million Len Lye Centre. The building has already earned notoriety for its stunning 32-tonne, 14m-high mirror-grade stainless steel facade.

Len Lye Centre
An experimental film-maker, poet, painter, kinetic sculptor, eccentric and ebullient personality, Len Lye is on of New Zealand’s most widely-known modernist artists. The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is home to the archives and studio collection of the Len Lye Foundation.
Born in Christchurch in 1901 and largely self-educated, Lye was driven by a life-long passion for motion, energy and the possibility of composing them as a form of art. Lye’s interests took him far from New Zealand; after sojourns in the South Pacific, Lye moved to London and then New York, where he became known as an intensely creative film-maker and kinetic sculptor.
In 1977, Len Lye returned to his homeland to oversee the first New Zealand exhibition of his work at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. Shortly before his death in 1980, Lye and his supporters established the Len Lye Foundation, to which he gave his work. The Gallery is the repository for much of this collection, employing a full-time curator to ensure its preservation and appropriate exhibition.
Lye’s sculptures are also held in the collections of several major art museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and Whitney Museum in New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Major repositories of Lye’s film work include the New Zealand Film Archive, the British Film Institute and the Museum of Modern Art.

The new combined facility, reopening in 2015, will extend the Govett-Brewster’s ability to offer extraordinary experiences with contemporary art while offering a new permanent home for the art and ideas of Len Lye.

An example of direct film – making.
Free Radicals is a black-and-white animated film short by avant-garde filmmaker Len Lye. Begun in 1958 and completed in 1979, Lye made the film by directly scratching the film stock. The resulting “figures of motion” are set to music by the Bagirmi tribe of Africa.
In 2008, the film was added to the United States National Film Registry.

COMMUNICATION DESIGN
Communication designers tell stories in creative and compelling ways. They ask questions, devise concepts and test design strategies through experimentation and prototype development.
On show in the DEBRIEF exhibition is an impressive range of promotional material, animation, illustration and graphic design work, communicating both personal convictions and client needs. Interesting, innovative and visually dynamic, 2014 graduates ensure that each project is graphically enticing.
Presenting third year students’ final works as they prepare to embark on their creative careers.

INTERIORS
Interiors designers create innovative and efficient solutions that respond to contemporary spatial and environmental needs. These solutions require a multidisciplinary approach in uniting fields such as architecture, product design and fashion to meet the spatial needs of clients.
This exciting exhibition showcases the diverse nature of interior design by celebrating and highlighting the hard work, passion and invention of 2014 graduates.

PRODUCT DESIGN
Enhancing and improving people’s experiences and environments is the ultimate aim of product designers. The students are strong independent thinkers who have a positive influence on the world through design. This exhibition features innovative approaches to designing everyday objects — a showcase of the only Product Design bachelor degree in the South Island.
For a taste of the possibilities presented by this dynamic industry, come along and experience their work in the DEBRIEF exhibition.

This varied and vibrant showcase offers a treat for the senses. Surprising, clever and insightful objects feature in this overview of design disciplines at Otago Polytechnic. In Collections 14, fledgling fashion designers showcase their latest collections in an exciting and inspirational display of talent and creativity. The emphasis of this annual event is third-year graduate collections, which demonstrate the designers’ individual directions. These are accompanied by stand-out looks created by students in their first two years of study and our Graduate Diploma of Design students.
Shanghai University of Engineering Science / IFA Paris will also show a selection of collections from eight of their designers, as part of the Shanghai Dunedin Sister City Fashion Communication Project.
The public will have the opportunity to view fashion students’ work up close as part of our School of Design exhibition, DEBRIEF.

It’s the eighth year Otago Polytechnic carpentry students have built a house to be auctioned for charity. It’s fully fitted and furnished with products and labour donated by over 20 generous local companies.
The four-bedroom home, complete with en suite and walk-in wardrobe for the master bedroom, is light, spacious and tastefully appointed. Funds raised at the auction will go to the nationally coordinated fundraising effort, United Way, which distributes the proceeds to charities throughout Otago.

Pop-up cinemas, projection displays and Shanghai-inspired fashion designs are just some of the exciting pieces on display, as third-year Otago Polytechnic Design students prepare for DEBRIEF; their end of year exhibition kicking off on Wednesday, November 20.
Spanning four design disciplines, DEBRIEF is an opportunity for Communication, Fashion, Interiors and Product students to make their debuts as designers. It is an exhibition of creativity and flair: a visual reference to the next chapter in life, turning over a new leaf and bookmarking important moments over three years of design degree study.

Dunedin Public Art Gallery upcoming exhibitions

The Asian is the first major solo exhibition by Heather Straka in a New Zealand public art gallery. For this project Straka has commissioned a selection of artisans from Shenzhen, China to produce fifty high-end copies of one of her original ‘Asian Girl’ paintings. An intriguing installation where ideas about the authentic and fake, truth and lie, original and copy are brought into question.

Singapore’s Largest Garden Project Unveiled

Designs have just been released for Bay South, an incredible botanical preserve topped with super-tall solar trees that is set to be Singapore’s largest garden project. Conceived by Grant Associates, the 101-hectare expanse of lush green space will be situated right next to the Marina Bay resort and will feature two botanical biospheres and a series of towering tree structures that double as vertical gardens.

Grant Associates and Gustafson Porter have won an international competition, organised by Singapore’s National Parks Board, to design Gardens by the Bay, part of the next phase of the city’s masterplan.

According to Grant Associates: This is the largest garden project ever undertaken in Singapore, and a landscape project of world significance. It is intended to raise Singapore’s profile and cement its image as the leading garden city in the east. It is therefore integral to the future planning of Singapore as a major global hub and business centre.

The masterplan takes its inspiration from the form of the orchid, and has an intelligent infrastructure that allows the cultivation of plants that would not otherwise grow in Singapore. The centrepiece of this infrastructure is the cluster of Cooled Conservatories along the edge of Marina Bay. The Cool Dry and the Cool Moist Conservatories showcase Mediterranean, tropical montane and temperate annual plants and flowering species. They also provide a flexible, flower-themed venue for events and exhibitions.

This is the second film created by Squint/Opera for the Singapore Bay International Design Competition to depict the client’s exuberant and ambitious scheme. It follows the flight of two dragonflies as they weave their way through the imagined gardens, guiding us through the unfurling layers of vegetation and the hothouse structures.

Squint/Opera is a film and media production studio whose unique work and methods bridge the disciplines of visual communication and architecture.The company makes short films, computer-generated visualisations, installations and interactive content to communicate architectural possibilities, putting narrative and humour to the service of deeply innovative design and techniques of illustration.
