Underwhelmed

The right word is underwhelmed, the Mayor neglected to notice his Council is about to pay the Chief Executive some $17,000 more… How could anyone get the round figure of $352,000 wrong? The Mayor has problems with lots of figures, does he know what the stadium is costing us yet. Not blazing likely.

Harland pay rise for work on stadium, rates
By David Loughrey
Dunedin City Council chief executive Jim Harland’s work on the Forsyth Barr Stadium and his efforts to reduce rates increases have been given as reasons for a pay increase of $11,725, which takes his salary to $346,725.

“… The committee considered the chief executive had been particularly diligent in progressing plans for the new Forsyth Barr Stadium to a position which allowed the council to make a fully informed decision when considering its commitment to the project and, since the council’s decision to proceed, that he has continued to play an important role in ensuring the stadium project will come in on time, on budget and fit for purpose.”

DCC Media Release – CEO salary and performance

Dunedin City Council
Media Release

Dunedin City Council Chief Executive’s Performance Rewarded

The Dunedin City Council’s Performance Appraisal Committee has assessed that Chief Executive Jim Harland has, over the past two years, exceeded the Council’s expectations under the terms of his contract.

Specifically, the Committee considered the Chief Executive had been particularly diligent in progressing plans for the new Forsyth Barr Stadium to a position which allowed the Council to make a fully informed decision when considering its commitment to the project and, since the Council’s decision to proceed, that he has continued to play an important role in ensuring the Stadium project will come in on time, on budget and fit for purpose.

It was noted that Mr Harland has also led the staff in identifying ways to reduce rate increases subsequently included in the Long Term Community and Annual Plans while maintaining high levels of staff satisfaction with the DCC as an employer.

The Chief Executive’s salary has been held at $335,000 since March 2008 and the Chief Executive had volunteered, along with members of his Corporate Management Team, to forgo the annual review of salaries in the 2008/09 financial year.

The Council has subsequently agreed that the Chief Executive’s salary for year commencing 8 March 2010 is $352,000.

Contact Mayor Peter Chin on 474 3855.
