Super 15 to kick-off in 2011

Sanzar has agreed on introducing a Super 15 in time for the 2011 rugby season, but will hold off on revealing their detailed plan for the future until next week. Officials from the New Zealand, Australian and South African rugby unions finally came to a Super Rugby consensus at a crisis meeting in Dublin overnight.

NZRU has a workshop next week to look at the Air New Zealand Cup, the number of teams in the competition, promotion-relegation and the salary cap.

Sports Comment: Stadium no panacea for Otago’s rugby ills

It would be foolish to believe the new stadium will be the panacea for Otago’s rugby ills. So much has been made of how rugby in Wellington was rejuvenated by the new stadium that many believe its mere presence will provide a lifeline for the game in Otago. It would be nice to think so, but that won’t necessarily be the case. There was no question Wellington needed a new stadium. Athletic Park was in a state of disrepair.

Storm brews at rugby HQ

Heavy foreign exchange losses, growing disharmony in the provinces and a controversial board nomination have set the stage for a tumultuous New Zealand Rugby Union annual meeting in Wellington.

It is understood the NZRU will announce a profit of about $300,000, but will exclude millions in foreign exchange losses as is now allowed under new international accounting rules.
