I experienced Fleetwood Mac at Western Springs, Auckland in the 1980s, there is no way I want to see them live now in a crap-for-sound covered stadium at Dunedin. This cat has already eaten the cream. I might see them at Mt Smart, however.
How much has DCC/DVML paid to the promoter to get the band here?
They’ve spent $350,000 on tired roller Rod Stewart, who has yet to perform.

Fleetwood Mac to play Stadium

The rumours are true — Fleetwood Mac is coming to Dunedin. It was confirmed yesterday the group, one of the world’s best-selling bands, will perform its only South Island show at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Wednesday, November 18. Tickets costing between $100 and $300 plus fees will go on public sale from 10am on April 1, and a bumper crowd is predicted to pump millions of dollars into Dunedin’s economy. The British-American group’s Dunedin show will feature all five original band members, with Christine McVie having reunited with Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.

The rumours are true – the legendary Fleetwood Mac will bring their On With The Show World Tour to New Zealand in 2015, presented by Live Nation and The Sound.
Touring as a five-piece for the first time since 1998, one of music’s most enduring groups of all time, Fleetwood Mac, will play two stadium shows this November. All five original band members are back together, with Christine McVie rejoining band mates Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks after a 16-year absence.
The news of Fleetwood Mac’s return is particularly welcomed by New Zealand fans after the band were unfortunately forced to cancel their sold-out 2013 dates.

Once again we are being “wowed” with the prospect of the big name concerts. This time it’s ‘Fleetwood Mac’, truly a big name in the past. Just how big today we’ll have to wait and see. Enter the usual ‘cringe factor’ as Terry Davies extols the injection of between $8 million and $10 million into the city’s economy. It’s embarrassing the constant carping on about the money which may or may not be true. How many benefit from this largesse is difficult to tell. No doubt the motel industry gets a bit, but does it really make that much to their annual bottom line? Any benefits to the average citizen is offset by the outgoings of the ticket prices of $100 to $300 plus fees. Then we never hear from Terry Davies of how much of the ratepayers’ $750,000 event inducement fund is used. Never talks about the amount the event promoters and artists take away. At an average ticket price of $150 and a crowd of 7,500 locals (visitors discounted) that would be $1,125,000 gone from our economy. All in all, I suspect it is a swings and roundabout with events elsewhere through the year that takes our citizens and their money to travel to. In a word a whole lot of ‘hoo haa’ over “an unknown factor”. But Dave Cull congratulated DVML for its concert successes and securing ‘Fleetwood Mac’. “There’s still more work to be done but it bodes well for the future,” he says. He’s right there, a huge amount of work if the venue is ever to pay its way. But he has eternal faith in ‘dreams’. And hey! for those keen it will be great. “Opiate of the masses” it is called.
Same old story. How much is it costing the ratepayers? We don’t know. How much is the economic impact? We don’t know. You would expect the exaggeration from Terry and Chameleon Dave…..well. It goes on. If the returns were there we would expect TRANSPARENCY, wouldn’t we.
They still haven’t found anyone under 60 to play.

There’s those ex-judges from the TV talent show. Apparently they are entertainers of some sort, not that anyone seems to have been amused by their performance as judges and apparently that’s not just in NZ, their “fame” on the media extends worldwide. So they aren’t going to be overwhelmed with !LOVE! and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’d perform at the FUBAR without being bribed, just so they can look like someone still wants to hear them. And there’s always an audience for a train wreck.

Your word on attending upcoming concerts at Forsyth Barr Stadium
Three high profile international music acts are coming to the city. Rod Stewart and Neil Diamond will play at Forsyth Barr Stadium, followed by Fleetwood Mac. So the 39 Dunedin News word on the street team asked members of the public if they plan to attend any of the concerts.

In other words, it’s not enough that we pay, pay, pay and pay year in, year out for the stadium. Now we have a duty to pay for tickets to shows, because even if we aren’t all that crazy about the performers on offer this time it’s the way to get other acts, ones we might really want to see.
SO good for Dunedin’s economy. Pay overseas entertainment providers, ie send more money out of the city. So what if this eats up our discretionary spending that we might prefer to spend at the Globe, the Regent, the Mayfair … or one of the many other performance venues – it’s our DUTY to further prop up the Fubar Stadium because of “the outstanding job of selling the venue and Dunedin, delivered by DVML CEO Terry Davies”, according to Murray Stott, a trademark agent and sponsorship broker, who clearly knows better than we do how each of us should spend our own money.
Hype, not your fault – but you see it clearly in any case ;)
I so try not to advantage the hyperventilator from AKL at this website by links, NO CONCEPT WHATSOEVER of the Council debt CRISIS and the low-wage/beneficiary economy at Dunners. Loons belong in zoos – and if the doppelgänger comes near this site again (to monitor – the egotist s.o.b.) he’ll wish he hadn’t. More kindly, dotage belongs in a rest home. I was kidding about the loons. Got that, Murr? Darling fruitcake. FO.
It’s another version of “get behind the stadium” and “make it work” and I’m buggered if I can fathom why the odt paid him for his long blethering column when even the usual “gbts and miw” loons appear to have given up writing to odt online. Perhaps it was the fulsome praise of Terry Davies that swung it. There are audible mumblings from the cheap seats – I mean the unseated & unimpressed – about cutting costs by doing away with a full time high-paid Schmoozer and Briber since we don’t (as far as anyone has been prepared to tell us, which means we definitely don’t) make a profit from concerts. It’s all the smoke and mirrors stuff about people paying large amounts to stay over 2 nights and spend up large on eats and drinks. This influx of money to the city only happens when out of town people come. When Dunedin people buy tickets the money flows out, so other Dunedin businesses lose those people’s entertainment spend because for most Dunedin people it’s not X AND Y, it’s X or y and z and….. when it comes to expensive nights out.
BTW did you see the complaint in The Wash from someone in Central Otago
who said during major events the place where they usually stay overnight when they come to Dunedin for other reasons insisted they had to book for 2 nights minimum for the Rod Stewart and Neil Diamond concerts, and for Fleetwood Mac the night’s accommodation isn’t the usual $110 but $150!
I think between T Davies (plonker in frozen yoghurt and used car sales) and the (invited) column writer there is oddity’s Nicholas Smith still believin’ he has a winner stadium on his hands. Tends to think that when he’s had a few.
Missed the wash, today left my oddity at a café for others to read…. I hardly ever read the wash, a bit like the rugger and racing pages. Greed. Like renting your house out for $750 a day, meanwhile camping in your stationwagon for the 2 nights minimum.
You get the odd, more substantial gem in The Wash, but essentially it doesn’t pretend to be anything more than a lite column to give the ODT a folksy, community feel. The ‘issues’ raised are generally noncontroversial…. safe. Sometimes it is funny how earnest it sounds over minutiae things that most people wouldn’t give a toss over.
Aside from rearranging the paper into more manageable sections…especially for the Saturday paper…I can’t think what other innovations the paper has made for such a long time now.
I am always puzzled on the Channel 39 News with their segment on ‘What’s in the ODT tomorrow?’ For example, they will tell us what is on the food and cooking pages (Fresh column) or what’s on the Sports page, or some human interest ‘cat up a tree’ story. Yet, you read the paper the next day and there is a filtered story on some latest DCC/DVML/DCHL debacle.
I like The Wash. Among the lite and folksy – and a quick skim identifies the parts that are of no interest to me – are pieces about issues that may seem trivial but not necessarily if you’re one of the people affected. Sometimes they are about “trivial” matters that shouldn’t be a problem if only someone who makes decisions (or issues permits, or designs roads or bus stops) was listening to the local people who know the situation in their patch.
One Fleetwood Mac fan, who did not want to be named, said he had baulked at paying the $1200 a night tariff advertised by one Dunedin accommodation provider.

$1200 for a night in a motel! Not a cent over. Do you know the name of that place, Elizabeth? As Farry has said,’We do things better in the south.’ Plenty of evidence of that over the years.
No idea Peter, in the past accommodation providers have been counselled to avoid sharkery but the message bypasses some. For a range of establishments outside Dunedin $1200 a night would be exceedingly good value – but what’s on offer here is unlikely to be to that standard.
Farry Motel?
There shouldn’t be a problem now with having a targeted rate for the stadium. It would appear that besides the rugby boys, the Motel / hospitality trade are the biggest benefactors of the stadium, and haven’t they learnt well from the council on price gouging (4% rate increase while we have zero inflation). John Christie appears to be quite relaxed with this price gouging. It’s all to do with economics, and generally accepted. YEAH RIGHT.
Kevin. Southern Hospitality at its best! We could be in Alabama, welcoming the folks as we sit on our balcony seat swings smokin’ a rolled $100 note or two.

Having visited Dunedin for the Elton John concert a while ago I was more than annoyed in having to stay for a minimum of 2 nights in Dunedin.
And again this situation arose for the upcoming Rod Stewart concert, having to stay in Dunedin for a minimum 2 nights.
Now we have the prospect of Fleetwood Mac performing, and having to go through the hoops again, this time we are being forced to stay in Dunedin for a minimum of 3 nights. Surely an individual has the right to book accommodation as it suits, not to be told by the provider to take it or leave it!
This situation exists across the board in Dunedin, with all providers playing the same tune.
Why should I be forced to stay? What justification do hoteliers/moteliers have to enforce this regime? It’s high time this nonsense ceased. Will we be forced to stay a week for the next concert?

It would be far cheaper to travel to Auckland for the concert where one night’s accommodation can be booked as is the norm. I wonder what the Dunedin Stadium has to say about the situation and the possibility they would lose patronage?

Mr Crick has strong ties to Greater Dunedin, the ‘loose connection and incorporated society’, etc. Comment hardly surprising then. More bullshit.
All this begs the question, why is it the DCC’s function to provide the city’s entertainment? Indeed, where is it in the philosophy of local government to be all things to all people other than supervising essential strategic services such as roading, water, sewage disposal, parks and rules of development. All else is simply business of business. For goodness sake, when will those elected nincompoops start to look at the reality of the citizens’ plight?
Calvin, the issue of lack of expenditure on roads here in Dunedin city really bothers me, as does the ageing stormwater infrastructure. Put the two together (failing stormwater under unmaintained roads) and you have a recipe for quite literally sudden collapse. Now I have never used Official Information rules to find out more about roadworks but I think I might test this out. The end of Nairn St where it meets with Shetland St is currently being dug up and I know there are old stormwater drains leading to the Kaikorai Stream and Common in that location which is just downhill from my home.

Fleetwood Mac tickets sell out
More than 28,000 tickets have been sold for the Fleetwood Mac concert in Dunedin. The November event at Forsyth Barr Stadium has officially sold out, with all general admission tickets bought within an hour of becoming available. There were a number of pre-sales for priority clients, but general tickets went on sale this morning. The promoters of the concert won’t say how many seats are being allocated for the event, but stadium managers say it’ll be a full house. The Fleetwood Mac concert is expected to bring millions of dollars into Dunedin, with accommodation already booked up for the days surrounding it.

Dunedin date for Black Sabbath tour
Black Sabbath have confirmed they’ll be touring one last time – and have added Dunedin to their world tour. The veteran rockers announced overnight that they’ll embark on The End world tour at the beginning of 2016 in the United States. The tour includes two New Zealand shows: Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium on April 30 and Auckland’s Vector Arena on April 28.

Back in the day we used to get announcements like this, except the act was coming to the Regent, and before that to His Majesty’s.
Jubilation! Youthful budgets examined and revised so as to find ticket money by the date of the performance.
Some weeks later ODT announcement that this play, ballet, musician had struck Dunedin off the itinerary because of insufficient bookings. We were slow to book, it was our fault, they told us.
It’s a small population, we were used to shows not being booked out until a couple of days before, if at all.
How did people fall for the spin about great touring events lining up for a chance to perform at the Fubar Stadium? Build it and they will come? Why wasn’t there a chorus of “Pull the other one, Malcolm”?

Fleetwood Mac wows capacity crowd
Fleetwood Mac fans are buzzing after last night’s full capacity concert at Forsyth Barr Stadium. Around 35,000 people attended the event, the largest crowd the stadium’s held. It was also Fleetwood Mac’s biggest audience on their 15 month world tour. Police are reporting a good response from fans, with just two people arrested for disorderly behaviour. The band played for over two hours, finishing about 10.30 PM. Lead singer Stevie Nicks and her fellow band members were rugged up against the cold while on stage. Dunedin was their only South Island concert, before two smaller shows in Auckland.
