Truckers give wee ones a lift
    By Vaughan Elder
Riding shotgun in a big truck as part of Special Rigs for Special Kids is the highlight of 9-year-old cancer survivor Phoenix Clarkson’s year. Phoenix was one of hundreds of children who took part in the convoy which drove from the Edgar Centre in Dunedin to Mosgiel and back yesterday.

Special Rigs for Special Kids a trucking good time
A glimpse at the life of a trucker was on offer for the children taking part in the weekend’s Special Rigs for Special Kids. The annual event gave about 300 children with disabilities the chance to ride around Dunedin’s suburbs in trucks. And the man who’s kept the event running for over two decades says new people are still jumping at the chance to participate.

Smiles on their dials keep driver coming back
    By Shawn McAvinue
A ride in a truck convoy is “so important” for children with disabilities, a Dunedin mum says. Suzie Helliwell said her son Carter loved seeing people waving at him from Dunedin streets as he passed in a big truck yesterday. […] Event president Greg Inch said 205 trucks transported about the same number of children and their families yesterday. He applauded the “resilient” people who braved the weather to wave at the trucks.

It’s a lovely thing to do, but sometimes I wonder about all those unspecial kids who don’t get treats because their families can’t provide them or are too busy being successful to “waste time” on their kids’ pure enjoyment.
Wouldn’t it be lovely if unspecial kids got some special treats now and then.

Even the drivers felt pretty special
A smile from a special kid is all the reward a truck driver needs. Dunedin Carrying Company truck driver Marc Harris (33), of Dunedin, said he drove a truck in Special Rigs for Special Kids in Dunedin yesterday to see a smile on a child’s face. […] Event president Greg Inch said yesterday was “absolutely fantastic”.

Special Rigs founder surprised with 25-year momento
The city hummed with the sound of hundreds of large engines over the weekend. They were participating in the Special Rigs for Special Kids charity event. And given it was the silver anniversary of the event, some felt it proper to surprise the founder with a momento.
