Further to Clarke and Dawe’s spoof on budgets…
Remember when Cr Richard Thomson wanted council to borrow from the Waipori Fund?
ODT 25.1.12 DCC could borrow from self
http://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/195505/dcc-could-borrow-self
The Dunedin City Council will consider borrowing from its own almost $70 million Waipori fund, instead of using commercial lending institutions.
[our post, by virtue of the title: Waipori Fund – inane thinkings from a councillor – things ODT can’t say]
Richard Thomson would be quite comfortable in borrowing from the Waipori Fund. After all, he saw no problem with Michael Swann borrowing $16m from the SDHB. That was until the Minister came and kneecapped him.
Didn’t attend the court case against Swann so I have no idea where R Thomson’s governance role (then ODHB chairman) truly sits in relation to the timeline for Michael Swann’s offending. Readers are welcome to enlighten with facts.

New initiative hoped to provide insight into city’s finances
The Dunedin City Council is hoping a new initiative will provide concerned ratepayers some insight into the city’s finances.
Video
To the right of that video is an opinion poll:
Opinion Poll
At $5 for children and $20 for adults, will you attend a Cricket World Cup game in 2015?
Yes 44%
No 56%
Total votes: 9
$20 for adults? Diabolical. I wouldn’t go unless they paid me well above the minimum hourly rate. Time and a half on weekends and after 6pm. Take it leave it, I say.
What- honesty?
Too much to hope for too fast? Still, if this is Hilary and learned friends keeping Thomson (chair of finance) and GD in line “going forward”… BRING IT ON.
It takes a special type of secure personality not to fall into patterns around wanting to be popular ahead of respected, or perhaps mistaking superficial popularity for respect? Having sound high-quality relationships with family, partner, close friends, outside work/politics seems to be important. I don’t think Hilary Calvert needs the Miss Popularity sash. Unless she finds she can’t live without it – unlikely – she’s a real asset on Council.
“New Initiative to provide insight into city’s finances.” Who, I wonder is going to do the initiating? Not Richard Thomson that’s for sure. Nor Mayor Dave Cull. The first prerequisite for providing any insight is, firstly, demonstrating that they have any understanding of it themselves. Face it, Cull and Thomson have been at that table for six years during which time they have both displayed a lamentable disregard for any financial understanding or prudence. They have taken part in approving and expanding the city’s indebtedness to the point where we have a (admitted) consolidated debt of over $620 million !! Say no more. It will take all the guile and wit for Crs Calvert, Vandervis, Hall and the other newcomers to reign in these GD reprobates. Even as we speak Cull, MacTavish and the others are hell bent on spending more $millions on cyclists, street furniture and God knows what. With the mandate he believes he has, the man will be unstoppable.

Think-tank meeting but councillors know nothing
By Jim Sullivan
Now that city councillors have settled into their three-year sentence, it is timely to give some praise to the DCC staff think-tank.
